The WWW took off where other Internet services (email, ftp, telnet) hadn't because of its seamless integration of documents. Users don't have to know where the documents are. Whether a hyper-link is to another part of the same document or to a document on the other side of the planet it looks the same to the user, who doesn't have to care about the location when following a link
